Shine a little light - CCTV in the darkness

CCTV surveillance in the darkness has always been one of the great issues within the Security industry. Over the years various products have entered the market some good, some not so. Yet the fact remains without the refraction & reflection of light, there is nothing to see.

Today, the main choice is between white light or infrared light and there are benefits for both.

With white light the obvious benefit is that the area under surveillance is blanketed in light. This immediately acts as a deterrent and enables colour video to be recorded around the clock, and the equipment specified can be more cost effective. In rare cases this can be classified as light pollution so its implementation needs to be in accordance with the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005.

In instances where the Environment Act excludes white light, then Infrared light can be used as it creates no light pollution. It does require more specialist equipment and it will only record in black and white, furthermore it provides no additional illumination for the human eye.

Halogen & Metal Halide Lights are still available in the market place but they have been superseded in recent years with the advent of LED technology. The new wave of LED Lights designed for the CCTV surveillance market provide a more uniform range of coverage plus a greater lifespan and reduced running costs.

Using White Light LED units, the colours remain accurate even at the edges of the coverage area, whilst the infrared units have no noticeable aberrations on the edges of the covered area.
